Rep. Walkinshaw Statement on Trump’s State of the Union Address

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman James R. Walkinshaw (VA-11) released the following statement in response to Trump’s State of the Union Address.

“Donald Trump is on the ropes, with record low approval ratings, failed policies, and a stinging rebuke from the Supreme Court. Tonight he did what Trump does when he’s on the ropes. He rambled aimlessly and lashed out.

He claimed we’re in the midst of a golden age for America with a roaring economy. That would be news to the 10 million Americans set to lose health care coverage because of his Big Ugly Bill and the hardworking families being crushed by the rising costs caused by his reckless tariffs, which he pledged to double down on.

Despite the presence of courageous Epstein survivors, Trump continued his pattern of callous disregard for their suffering. He continues to lead perhaps the biggest cover up in American history, refusing to release the files in accordance with the law. He wishes convicted child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell well, but turns his back on the brave survivors of her and Epstein’s crimes.

Tonight, Congressional Republicans did what they do each day in the House Chamber — Trump’s bidding. They clapped when Trump said clap, stood when he said stand, and abandoned any previously held principles when he instructed them to do so. It was as embarrassing to watch their obsequiousness tonight as it is each day to watch them march in lockstep to his reckless agenda.”
