Statement from Congressman Walkinshaw on Congressman Steny Hoyer’s Retirement Announcement

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman James R. Walkinshaw (VA-11) released the following statement in response to Congressman Steny Hoyer’s (MD-05) retirement announcement.

“Steny Hoyer has been an institution in Congress and one of the most consequential leaders of his generation. During some of the most trying moments in our nation’s history, he was a steady hand and a historic congressional leader, helping to deliver transformative progress, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Throughout it all, he remained a fierce defender of public service and of the people who make government work.

He was also a statesman on the international stage, a thoughtful and widely respected leader on international cooperation and national security, and a trusted confidant to United States presidents who relied on his judgment and experience.

Even as he shaped national and global policy, Steny never lost sight of home. He was a passionate advocate for Maryland, showing up every day to serve the needs of his community. He was truly a members’ member, respected across the institution, and he set a standard for how leaders should treat staff and colleagues alike. I saw that commitment firsthand as Congressman Connolly’s Chief of Staff, especially in his unwavering support for federal employees, his leadership on Metro, and his belief in regional cooperation.

Steny Hoyer’s legacy is one of service, integrity, decency, and lasting impact.”
