Congressman Walkinshaw has been a consistent advocate for common-sense gun safety laws that protect communities while respecting responsible gun ownership. On the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, he led the effort to pass a landmark ordinance banning guns in County buildings, libraries, recreation centers, and parks.
He also championed Fairfax County’s implementation of Virginia’s Red Flag Law and led public education efforts to ensure residents understand how to use it. These initiatives have helped make Fairfax County one of the safest large jurisdictions in the United States, with some of the lowest violent crime rates in the nation. As a parent of a young child who has already experienced a preschool lockdown, James knows the urgency of preventing gun violence. In Congress, he supports legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, close the Charleston loophole, require background checks on all gun sales, and oppose federal concealed carry mandates that override state protections. He backs comprehensive measures advanced in previous Congresses by the House Democrats, including the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act, to strengthen gun safety while protecting law-abiding gun owners. |
