Dear Neighbor,
Tomorrow I’ll travel to Minnesota to conduct oversight into the surge of immigration enforcement agents into Minneapolis, the killing of Renee Good by an ICE officer, and the ongoing violence taking place there.
As a Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, which has oversight jurisdiction over the Department of Homeland Security, I want to hear firsthand from the community members and leaders on the ground about what they’re experiencing.
After speaking with constituents at events across Fairfax this past week, I heard a clear message: people want answers, transparency, and action to rein in the reckless policies of the Trump Administration.

|
While in Minnesota, I will engage with local public officials and community leaders, and listen directly to residents, including U.S. citizens who were arrested or detained in immigration enforcement actions.
|
I will bring what I learn back to my work in Congress as I press for accountability from DHS and Secretary Kristi Noem. As the House considers an Appropriations bill to fund DHS, I am fighting for language that would rein in the abuses we’ve seen from ICE and other agencies, including masked agents, agents refusing to identify themselves, weak use of force standards, detention without a warrant, inadequate training, and more.
I’m also watching closely as Trump’s Department of Justice has launched a probe involving Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. I believe this reflects a broader dynamic in which independent institutions come under pressure when they do not align with partisan demands. That pressure is concerning, regardless of party, because it can erode trust in the rule of law and in institutions meant to operate independently
For Fairfax families, the consequences can be real. If the Federal Reserve’s independence is diluted, markets will react with instability and higher risk, translating into higher interest rates and higher borrowing costs. That can mean higher mortgage and rent pressures, more expensive credit card debt, and higher costs for small businesses trying to grow and hire. Given the cost of living and affordability challenges facing the American people right now, the last thing we need is additional uncertainty.
In closing, I voted last week in favor of legislation restoring the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits that expired on January 1. In Fairfax, thousands of families are scrambling to stay insured as premiums climb and household budgets get squeezed even further after these credits expired.
Now the Senate must move quickly to finish the job and pass the legislation.
Please continue reading below to learn more about how I’ve been serving you.

Yesterday, I joined fellow Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee to demand accountability and justice following the tragic killing of Renee Good during an ICE operation in Minneapolis.
Renee’s death was heartbreaking and should never have happened. It is a sobering example of what’s at stake under the Trump Administration’s mass deportation policies led by Secretary Noem: a deportation machine that has become reckless, out of control, and now deadly. There must be a fair and impartial investigation into Renee’s killing to ensure that no more Americans die at the hands of ICE.
Right now, law-abiding American citizens and immigrants across the country are leaving home and wondering: Am I next? Could I be wrongly detained, disappeared, hurt, or worse?
DHS has spiraled into chaos. This shooting is not a one-off. Reporting shows federal immigration officers have opened fire at least 16 times nationwide since January, 2025. When this behavior is normalized, it’s only a matter of time before another operation ends in tragedy.
I will continue to fight for justice for Renee.

This week, I celebrated Korean American Day (January 13) by attending and speaking at several events recognizing the extraordinary contributions Korean Americans have made to our country.
It was wonderful to see familiar faces from Fairfax on the Hill as we celebrated the culture, service, and leadership of the Korean American community.
With roughly 30,000 Korean American residents in our district, I remain committed to strengthening the U.S.–Korea alliance and advancing the shared values that bring our community together.

This weekend, I hosted a Congress on Your Corner at Pohick Library. Our Congress on Your Corner events give constituents an opportunity to meet directly with me and my staff to let us know what’s on your mind and how we can better serve you.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, and to the Pohick Library staff for hosting us.

I also attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor with BSA Troop 698 in Burke.
Congratulations to Troop 698’s newest Eagle Scout, Stanley Carroll. Stanley is an amazing young leader whose Eagle Scout project was the creation of a beautiful mural at the entrance of Cherry Run Elementary School.
Thank you to the Scouts, troop leaders, and parents for the time and commitment you put into service and leadership.

I also spoke with community members in Vienna about their concerns regarding the Trump Administration’s immigration policies.
Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and justice, and I will keep doing my part in Congress to press for accountability and protect due process.

Virginia Railway Express to Make Service Adjustments for Long Bridge Project
This month, VRE will adjust service to accommodate construction of the Long Bridge Project—the largest rail investment in the region in generations. When completed, this nationally significant project will ultimately allow more frequent and reliable rail service across Virginia and the East Coast.
Because District of Columbia noise ordinances limit construction to 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., crews must work during the day, requiring a five-hour midday construction window (8:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Mon–Sat). To fit this work in:
VRE Service Adjustments:
• No VRE trains will be eliminated – but some trains will start/stop at Alexandria instead of Union Station. • The Amtrak Step-Up Program is returning, giving VRE multi-ride ticketholders more options to travel in/out of Union Station. • Service adjustments will be temporary and may be refined over the 2026–2030 project period.
Amtrak Virginia Service Adjustments: Amtrak will continue to serve Virginia during construction but with temporary adjustments:
• 4 daily roundtrip trains (2 to Norfolk and 2 to Newport News). • 2 daily express buses to and from Hampton Roads, giving Newport News an additional connection to Washington, DC • Total service will equal 6 combined rail + bus roundtrips (slightly more than the current 5 all-rail roundtrips). • Departure and arrival times will shift slightly, but corridor connectivity remains.
