Dear Neighbor,

When President Trump was asked this week how much the financial struggles of American families are motivating him to make a deal and end his war with Iran, his answer was "I don't think about Americans' financial situation."

75% of Americans say this war has hurt them financially.

And they feel this way because gas prices are up 44% from a year ago. Inflation just hit its highest point in three years. And DC conservatives have cost the average household an extra $5,000 per year through Trump's tariff policies, soaring gas prices, higher grocery bills, health insurance premium increases, and spiking utility bills.

Rep Walkinshaw

Families are choosing between filling up their tank, putting food on the table, or keeping the lights on at home.

Instead of working with Democrats to lower costs, Republicans' funding bills have bankrolled Trump's policy agenda: ripping health care from millions, cutting food assistance for kids, veterans, and seniors, and raising the price of everything from utilities to groceries.

Now Republicans have proposed $1 billion in their latest funding bill that would deliver funding for his Golden Ballroom plan.

The war in Iran is a war the American people never asked for, don’t support, and are now paying for every time they go to the pump.

That is why this week, I am once again voting to end this conflict. Democrats continue to bring War Powers Resolutions to the floor, and I will continue to support them.

These votes have come close to passing. We only need a few DC conservatives to show some courage, stand with the families paying the price, and help bring this war to an end.

Standing With Law Enforcement This National Police Week

This week, our nation celebrates National Police Week to honor the law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every single day to keep our communities safe.

I want to take a moment to thank the men and women of the Fairfax County Police Department, Fairfax City Police Department, and the Virginia State Police. Your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to this community do not go unnoticed.

National Police Week is also a time to remember the officers we have lost and to recommit to supporting those who carry lasting wounds from their service. That is why I am fighting for the January 6th Law Enforcement Heroes Compensation Act, which would provide compensation to the more than 140 officers who were injured defending the U.S. Capitol, covering their medical expenses, lost wages, and long-term care. Modeled on the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, this bill ensures that officers who were wounded in the line of duty receive the support they earned.

The families of any fallen officer would receive a death payment of no less than $4.975 million.

To every officer serving in our community and across this country: thank you. Your service is the foundation this community is built on, and I will always fight to make sure you have the support you deserve.

Fighting to Deliver Cleaner Air

for Our Veterans and Troops

Our veterans and service members deserve world-class facilities. That is why I am fighting to pass an amendment in this year's Military Construction and Veterans Affairs funding bill that would ensure VA and military facilities meet strong indoor air quality and ventilation standards, with independent oversight to make sure those standards are actually being met.

Most amendments never make it this far. The fact that ours did means we are one step closer to real change for veterans and service members, and we are fighting hard to deliver it.

Our troops and veterans have already sacrificed enough. The last thing they should have to worry about is breathing clean air in the buildings where they receive care and serve our country.

Standing Up for Human Rights

This week, Senator Tim Kaine and I partnered to call on Trump to press China to stop forcibly returning North Korean refugees to a country where they face torture, forced labor, imprisonment, and execution.

America must be a beacon for human rights. That demands that we use every diplomatic tool at our disposal to protect the most vulnerable.

The world expects us to speak up when human rights abuses are taking place. I will keep pushing until China lives up to its obligations under international law.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Continues to Deliver for Our Community

Fairfax County is one of the safest and best-served large jurisdictions in the country because we invest in the people who keep us safe.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department’s 2025 Annual Report shows just how much our first responders do every day to protect families, businesses, and communities across the county. In 2025, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to 131,605 incidents, reflecting the extraordinary demand placed on our firefighters, emergency medical personnel, rescue teams, volunteer members, and civilian staff.

Their work also helped protect an estimated $23.7 billion in property through emergency response, fire suppression, mitigation, and prevention efforts.
These numbers tell an important story: Fairfax County’s success does not happen by accident. It is the result of highly trained personnel, strong local leadership, continued investment, and a community that understands the importance of supporting first responders.

In Congress, I will always fight to make sure our fire, rescue, and emergency response personnel have the federal funding, resources, equipment, and support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. Whether responding to medical emergencies, fires, technical rescues, natural disasters, or everyday calls for help, our first responders deserve nothing less.

Thank you to every member of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue for your service, professionalism, and commitment to protecting our community.

Graduation Season Begins at George Mason University

Graduation season is here in Fairfax County, and George Mason University’s EagleBank Arena will once again serve as a major gathering place for students, families, educators, and loved ones celebrating this important milestone.

From May 14 through June 17, EagleBank Arena will host commencement ceremonies for George Mason University, Northern Virginia Community College, and several local high schools. Multiple ceremonies will take place each day on and around the Fairfax Campus, so residents should expect heavier traffic in the area during this period.

These celebrations are a powerful reminder of why investing in education matters. From our public schools to community colleges and universities, Northern Virginia is home to outstanding students, educators, and institutions that help prepare the next generation of leaders, innovators, public servants, and members of our workforce.

To every graduate celebrating this season: congratulations. Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance have brought you to this moment, and our entire community is proud of you.

As families travel to celebrate, please plan ahead, check the ceremony schedule, and allow extra time when driving near George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus.

Fairfax County Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary

America’s 250th anniversary is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history, honor the communities that shaped it, and celebrate the work still ahead to build a stronger democracy.

Here in Fairfax County, we are fortunate to live in a region that has played an important role in America’s story. From Mount Vernon to the National Museum of the United States Army, Northern Virginia is home to historic landmarks, cultural institutions, and community spaces that help tell the story of who we are as a country.

Throughout the year, Fairfax County and communities across the region will host special events, performances, exhibits, and experiences to mark this milestone. In Congress, I am proud to represent a district with such deep ties to American history, and I will continue working to protect our historic sites, support our local tourism economy, and ensure future generations can learn from the stories that shaped our nation.

Here are a few upcoming events residents may want to keep on their radar:

  • May 17–18: Tephra ICA Arts Festival at Reston Town Center
  • May 23: 26th Annual Ride of the Patriots
  • May 24: Blast Off! “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band at Wolf Trap
  • May 30–31: The American Revolution in Virginia: 1775–1776 at the National Museum of the U.S. Army

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, I hope families across VA-11 take advantage of these local events, support our community institutions, and reflect on the responsibility we all share to keep building a more perfect union.

Walkinshaw in the Community

The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton has become one of Northern Virginia’s defining cultural institutions, creating a space for creativity, education, and community connection through the arts.

It was great to join this year’s Workhouse Ball and celebrate the artists, staff, volunteers, and supporters who continue to make the Workhouse such an important part of our region. I was even able to share a brief update on my legislative work with attendees!

Last week I had the pleasure of touring Arcfield's headquarters right here in Chantilly to see firsthand the cutting-edge work they are doing to support national security and space operations.

Northern Virginia is home to some of the most innovative technology companies in the world, and visits like this remind me why fighting for federal investment in advanced technology and digital infrastructure is so important.

The future of a modernized federal government is being built right here in our backyard.
