Dear Neighbor,

We are now on day 23 of the federal government shutdown — and still, right-wing conservative leaders refuse to negotiate to reopen the government and cancel policies that will cause families to face skyrocketing health care premiums.

I continue traveling to the Capitol daily – urging my colleagues to work with Democrats to end the shutdown.

This week, thousands of federal workers across Northern Virginia will miss their paychecks. These are our neighbors, friends, and honorable public servants who keep our government running.

Rep Walkinshaw

It’s not right, especially after the attacks they have experienced already this year.

That’s why I’ve refused my own paycheck until this shutdown is over. If the federal workers I represent are not getting paid because of the shutdown, neither should Members of Congress.

I also joined Senators Tim Kaine, Lisa Murkowski, Chris Van Hollen, Angela Alsobrooks, and Mark Warner in a bipartisan effort to ensure furloughed federal workers receive their back pay, which is guaranteed under federal law. We demanded the Trump Administration follow the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019, which clearly requires that all federal employees must receive their back pay once the shutdown ends. Period.

No one should be left in financial limbo because of right-wing partisan policies.
As this shutdown continues, my office remains ready to serve you. Our Shutdown Resource Guide includes a detailed list of frequently asked questions and additional information that is helpful as families navigate this shutdown.

I’ll continue doing everything in my power to reopen the government, protect health care, and get federal workers the pay and respect they deserve.

Federal Employee & Retiree Open Season Workshop

With health care choices front and center this time of the year, I want to make sure every federal employee and retiree in our community has the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

Open Season enrollment for federal employees and retirees begins November 10 and runs through December 8, 2025. To help you prepare, I will be hosting an Open Season Workshop on Saturday, November 1, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035).

We’ll be joined by a Federal Employees Health Benefits expert, along with health care vendors who can answer questions about plan options, coverage updates, and benefits for the year ahead.

This is a valuable opportunity to compare plans, learn about available options, and make informed choices during Open Season.

For more information on Federal Employee Health Benefits, visit OPM’s website. Details on dental and vision coverage are available here.

As always, my office is here to help. If you have any questions or need assistance, please call us at (703) 256-3071.

Pressing Trump's DHS for Answers on Staff Firings that Put America's Cybersecurity at Risk

Gov_Exec_Resized

As foreign cyber threats grow more dangerous, I pressed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for answers on recent policy decisions to reassign and fire cybersecurity experts who protect our nation’s power grids, hospitals, and water systems. I was joined by Reps. Shontel Brown, Suhas Subramanyam, Eugene Vindman, and Eleanor Holmes Norton in calling on Secretary Kristi Noem to restore these critical positions and ensure our nation’s defenses remain strong.

These policies removed professionals from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the team responsible for defending America’s critical infrastructure, and redirected them to unrelated political priorities. While the reassignments themselves raise serious concerns, firing or reducing these positions during a shutdown could violate the Antideficiency Act, which prohibits federal agencies from firing federal workers during a shutdown.

Keeping America safe from cyberattacks must always come before politics.

I’ll continue fighting to ensure our federal cybersecurity workforce has the stability and resources it needs to protect American families and communities.

While Conservatives Vacation,

Fairfax Families Pay the Price

This shutdown should never have happened. While right-wing extremists in Washington continue their month-long vacation, millions of Americans, including thousands of Fairfax families, are set to miss paychecks and face skyrocketing health care premiums.

These are not just numbers. They are our neighbors.

This week, Lindsay from Fairfax shared her story during a hearing held by the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. Lindsay’s 10-year-old son, Calvin, has multiple disabilities, and she told us how Republican policies that cut Medicaid threaten her child’s care and her family’s stability.

She bravely advocated for Congress to protect Medicaid and health care.
Lindsay’s courage reminds us of what is at stake.

I will keep showing up to fight for families like hers and for every federal worker, nurse, teacher, and retiree who deserves a government that works for them.

It is time for my conservative colleagues to get back to work, negotiate with us to end this shutdown and avert this health care crisis.

Walkinshaw in the Community

Monticello

Neighbors showed up for the Monticello Woods Neighborhood Night Out BBQ. Joined by Supervisor Lusk, Senator Marsden, and our public safety partners, we celebrated the community spirit that makes Fairfax strong and the safest large jurisdiction of its size.

In Congress, I’m fighting to make sure every neighborhood has the resources and support it needs to thrive.

Climate Action Conference 2

On the Board of Supervisors, I launched Fairfax’s first Climate Action Conference in 2023. At this year’s 3rd annual conference, local leaders, national experts, and neighbors shared bold ideas to protect our waterways and address climate change.

That same urgency drives my work in Congress to secure clean-energy investments and a sustainable future for all.

Cornerstones

Cornerstones, a Fairfax-based nonprofit, continues to prove what compassion in action looks like. Their Abundant Harvest event highlighted how local partnerships fight hunger and lift up families.

As federal budget cuts and the shutdown put added strain on working families, I’m fighting in Congress to ensure every family has access to food, care, and opportunity.

NAACP

The Fairfax NAACP’s Freedom Fund Gala was a night of hope, history, and purpose. Standing alongside Rep. Jennifer McClellan and so many local changemakers, I reaffirmed my commitment to justice and equality for all.

I was honored to receive the Friend of the NAACP Award and will continue working to eliminate barriers so that every American can reach their full potential.
