Dear Neighbor,
I’m proud to share that I’ve been appointed to the House Committee on Homeland Security — an opportunity that ensures Fairfax has a strong voice in shaping the policies that protect our families, our federal workforce, and our national security. I’m grateful to Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the Steering and Policy Committee, and Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson for the chance to serve in this important role.
Fairfax is a global center for cybersecurity and homeland security expertise. Thousands of mission-critical federal workers and cybersecurity professionals living in our community help defend the country. As our nation faces growing threats — from cyberattacks to infrastructure vulnerabilities — it’s essential that the department refocus on its core mission. Unfortunately, vital DHS resources are being diverted away from those homeland security responsibilities and toward politically driven, wasteful, and cruel mass deportation efforts.

My work on the Committee will focus on strengthening our cyber defenses, improving resilience, and ensuring DHS has what it needs to keep our region and our nation safe.
As we approach the holiday season — with Thanksgiving just a week away — I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve you. I know this year has been challenging for many in Fairfax, and I hope the days ahead give you time to rest and spend meaningful time with the people you love. Whether you’re gathering with family, hosting friends, volunteering in the community, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, I wish you a warm and peaceful Thanksgiving.

And before the holiday, I’ll be joining WAMU’s The Politics Hour with Kojo Nnamdi and Tom Sherwood this Friday, November 21, at 12:00 p.m. EST at Fair Oaks Mall (11750 Fairfax Oaks Mall, Fairfax, VA 22033) for a special community edition of the program. Politics Hour is taking the show on the road to hear directly from Northern Virginians, highlight local voices, and spotlight the issues that matter most to our region. I hope to see many of you there — or invite you to listen in on WAMU 88.5 from wherever you are!
Make sure to follow me on X, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and Threads to stay up-to-date!

Mosaic Elementary received a well-deserved spotlight as Tommy McFLY’s Teacher Tour made its way to Fairfax. It was a joy to spend the morning with the incredible educators, staff, and brilliant students who make this school such a special place for our community.
With support from School Board Chair Karl Frisch and the Virginia Lottery, we celebrated the public servants whose dedication keeps Mosaic thriving. From inspiring classroom leaders to support staff who keep the building running, Mosaic is a reminder of why Fairfax County continues to lead the nation in public education.
In Congress, I’ll keep working to strengthen the federal investments that help schools like Mosaic continue to grow, innovate, and support every child’s success. Our students deserve every opportunity to thrive — and that starts with strong schools, empowered educators, and a community that lifts them up.

Our D.C. neighbors deserve the same right to govern themselves as every other community.
Yet this week, Congress passed legislation that interferes in decisions that belong to local leaders. I was proud to stand with D.C. leaders, advocates, and residents to oppose these harmful attacks on the District’s right to chart its own future.
As a former member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, I know that the local decisions that shape communities should be made by local public officials who are guided by the voices of the people they serve.

This weekend, I joined WellFed at First Baptist Church of Vienna to meet with families impacted by federal workforce cuts. It’s difficult to hear the stories of those who lost their jobs because of reckless policies, but inspiring to see former federal workers supporting one another.
In Congress, I’m working to restore stability and protect the people who keep our government running.

I was proud to join the SPARCle Awards Gala, celebrating the extraordinary work SPARC does to help adults with disabilities live fulfilling, independent lives. Congratulations to this year’s honorees, including Loudoun County Chair Phyllis Randall.
In Congress, I’ll keep working to expand opportunity, dignity, and support for Virginians with disabilities.

I was honored to be with Fairfax’s Uyghur American community for the Uyghur Republic Commemoration. With the largest Uyghur population in the U.S., Fairfax has an important voice in the fight for human rights. I’ll continue advocating for those values in Congress.

I was grateful to take part in a celebration of Korean National Day and Armed Forces Day with Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha. Our district’s vibrant Korean American community is one of our greatest strengths, and I’ll keep working in Congress to support and strengthen those ties.

The Fairfax Tree Rescuers launched their PRISM initiative to combat invasive species across Fairfax County and I was able to stop by to thank them for their great work. At a time when federal environmental policy is moving in the wrong direction, our community showed that local action still makes a real difference.
I’ll keep working in Congress to support environmental stewardship here at home.

I had the privilege of attending Devotion to Children’s annual gala, celebrating 31 years of supporting early childhood education and childcare for families across Northern Virginia.
I spoke about how I’m fighting in Congress to deliver affordable childcare, stronger early-childhood programs, and the support working families deserve.

Family Caregivers Month
November marks National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the over 63 million family caregivers across the United States who selflessly provide care and support to loved ones with health needs. These dedicated individuals are the unsung heroes of our healthcare system, delivering billions of hours of unpaid care while managing their own work, family, and personal challenges. Led by the Caregiver Action Network, National Family Caregivers Month brings national attention to the vital role that family caregivers play. Family caregivers face unique challenges, balancing their responsibilities, navigating complex medical systems, and maintaining their physical and emotional well-being— making resources and support essential. National Family Caregivers Month provides opportunities to raise awareness about these challenges, connect caregivers with trusted tools and networks, and educate communities about ways to support them more effectively.
As a community, let’s honor the work of family caregivers this November, ensuring they know they are appreciated while connecting them with the resources they need to thrive in their demanding and compassionate roles. The Fairfax Area Agency on Aging offers evidence-based programs, educational webinars and workshops, and resources and services focused on caregivers’ needs. Learn more about Family Caregiver Support Programs in the Resources for Older Adults & Caregivers section. Reach the Agency at (703) 324-7948 and email address FairfaxAAA@fairfaxcounty.gov for the Area Agency on Aging.
