Dear Neighbor,
Just as there was finally a real path to end this unnecessary shutdown and provide immediate relief for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) workers, including TSA officers, cybersecurity experts, FEMA personnel, and members of the Coast Guard, House conservatives did not bring the clean funding deal to the floor for a vote.
Last Friday, the Senate unanimously passed the clean funding bill — a solution Democrats had proposed weeks earlier and one I had been pushing for throughout this shutdown. It was a commonsense compromise that would have allowed for continued negotiations around reforms to ICE and CBP.
|
|
But on the very morning the House was expected to vote, DC conservative leadership did not bring the bill up for a vote -- continuing this shutdown even as DHS workers are left carrying the burden.
While the Trump Administration is paying ICE agents and other law enforcement with funds from the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” thousands of FEMA workers, cybersecurity workers, and administrative staff from across DHS continue to go without their paychecks.
Instead of accepting a clean deal to reopen DHS, the majority in Congress has conditioned reopening DHS on immigration enforcement policies that have spread fear in communities, raised serious concerns about illegal arrests and detentions, and come under growing scrutiny following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota.
This crisis is no longer about a lack of options. The solution was there. The Senate acted. Yet this shutdown continues.
Our federal workers should never be treated like pawns. They deserve stability, respect, and a paycheck they can count on. I will keep pushing for the same thing I have from the start: reopen DHS, support the federal workers who protect our communities, and pursue reforms that restore accountability.

I was glad to speak with hundreds of constituents this past weekend at local No Kings Day events across our community.
With beautiful weather and strong turnout, it was a powerful reminder that people across Northern Virginia remain deeply engaged and committed to making their voices heard. I appreciated the chance to speak directly with constituents about my work in Congress to provide oversight and accountability over actions taken by the Trump administration, and to hear firsthand about the concerns families are carrying right now.
Staying connected to the people I serve is one of the most important parts of this job, and conversations like these help shape the work I do on behalf of Northern Virginia every day.

I recently joined Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Jamie Raskin in demanding answers about the Trump administration’s expansion of warehouse-style immigration detention centers.
This proposal is part of a broader mass deportation policy agenda and would place thousands of people in facilities built to store products, not house human beings. Reports indicate the Administration wants these sites to hold thousands of detainees at a time, even though experts have warned that warehouses often lack the ventilation, plumbing, sanitation, and other infrastructure necessary for safe human habitation.
We are pressing for answers about how these sites are being approved, whether they can meet basic health and safety standards, and how the Administration plans to prevent the inhumane conditions, medical neglect, and lack of oversight that have already raised serious concerns in detention facilities across the country.
I will keep pushing for transparency, accountability, and basic human dignity.

Northern Virginia’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our community is enriched by families of many backgrounds, cultures, and traditions, and that global perspective is part of what makes this region so vibrant. I was honored to meet with Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Denis Bećirović, during his visit to Washington.
Our conversation reinforced the importance of strong international partnerships and democratic values at a time when global stability cannot be taken for granted.
As a representative of such a diverse community, I believe those relationships matter.

I was glad to join the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department in celebrating 75 years of service to our community.
It was a great opportunity to hear directly from first responders about their experiences and the needs they see on the ground, which helps inform my work in Congress.
Congratulations on this incredible milestone — and thank you for your longstanding service to Centreville and Fairfax County.

Last month, in honor of Women's History Month, I hosted a panel at Workhouse Arts Center bringing together 100+ community members to discuss the history of women's rights and the road ahead.
From the Dobbs decision to the SAVE Act, women's rights remain under threat — and I will continue fighting in Congress to ensure the founding promise that all are created equal is fulfilled for everyone.
