Congressman Walkinshaw Statement on His Vote Against the Republican Continuing Resolution

September 20, 2025

Washington, D.C.Congressman James R. Walkinshaw (VA-11) issued the following statement on the House Republican Continuing Resolution.

“I voted no because I will not support legislation that makes the health care crisis worse and does nothing to protect federal workers from Trump’s attacks. Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. They have the power to lower costs—but on Donald Trump’s orders, they’re refusing to negotiate unless Democrats agree to slash Medicaid, raise premiums, and drive up the price of everyday essentials.

Here in Virginia, the impact is devastating: 322,000 Virginians—including children and seniors —will lose their Medicaid coverage, and families in Virginia’s 11th District will pay $1,200 more in health care premiums.

We need a funding bill that protects health care and lowers costs—not one that strips coverage away and drives prices higher. If there is a government shutdown, responsibility will rest solely with Republicans who turned their backs on Virginia families already struggling with rising costs.”
